Robert Conard

ROBERT C. CONARD (Cincinnati, Ohio, 1933) is Professor Emeritus of German at the University of Dayton. He studied in Vienna in 1956 and 1957. When the Hungarian Revolution broke out in October 1956, Conard volunteered to work in the refugee camp opening in Traiskirchen, Austria. He became the director of a language school in the camp which offered class- es in several languages. He is one of the editors of the 27-volume annotated edition of the collected works of Heinrich Böll (2002–2010). His other publications, besides those on Böll, have been on the German authors Bertolt Brecht, Hermann Hesse, Martin Walser, Peter Bichsel, as well as translations of Böll, Brecht, Günter Grass, Nelly Sachs, Uwe Timm, Wolfgang Hildesheimer, and Kurt Pinthus’ collection of expressionist poetry, Menschheitsdämmerung.
